The Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang, First Emperor of China (260-210 BC)

The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, first Emperor of China and is considered as a form of funerary art.

The sculptures were discovered in 1974 by local farmers not far from Xi'An.

The Terracotta Army was buried with the emperor to protect him in his afterlife. The human figures are life-sized but vary in height, uniform and hairstyle according to their rank, the tallest being the generals. The figures include armored warriors, unarmored infantrymen, helmeted and spear- carrying charioteers, kneeling and standing archers as well as generals and lower ranked officers.
